Diwali Festival of Lights - 21st October 2006

Hindu "Festival of Lights," in honour of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Diwali in Fiji has traditionally been a time of good will and coming together. Diwali is an appropriate time to affirm the humanity of persons and the different cultural communities in the Fiji society. It gives us an opportunity to learn from one another and to widen understanding among the different communities living in Fiji. The islands' Hindus celebrate the annual Festival of Lights, Diwali with elaborate light and candle decorations, creating a beautiful spectacle as the night draws in. This festival of lights is celebrated with much fanfare by Fijian Hindus, who make up 80 per cent of Indo-Fijians.

Fiji Day - 9th October 2006

The anniversary of both Fiji's cession to the United Kingdom in 1874 and attainment of independence in 1970. The week leading up to Fiji Day is called Fiji Week, a week of religious and cultural ceremonies celebrating the country's diversity.

Lautoka Sugar Festival

Lautoka is the second largest city of Fiji. It is in the west of the island of Viti Levu, 24 kilometers north of Nadi, and is capital of the Western Division of Fiji. Covering an area of 1607 square kilometers, it had a population of 42,917 at the 1996 census, the last held to date. The best time of year to visit Lautoka is in September, so you can take part in the annual Sugar Festival. The entire community enjoys this outstanding event, and people from other cities around Fiji come to Lautoka to take part in this celebration of life and love. Sugar is the crop of Lautoka, the driving force that keeps the economy successful. In turn, this ancient festival pays tribute to their bountiful crop, in hopes that it will continue to bring them prosperity for generations to come.
