SMA-WA in conjuction with the AFL are offering doctors a unique opportunity to develop their skills & knowledge in sports medicine and experience firsthand what it is like to be the medical offiicer for the West Coast Eagles, the Fremantly Dockers & other elite sporting teams. The Law School at the University of Melbourne is running a graduate program in sports law, which is open to suitably qualified applicants who do not hold a law degree, as well as those with legal qualifications. This intensive course will be held over 5 afternoons, 1pm - 6.30pm, beginning 27th April. Teachers include Mr Hayden Opie, Associate Professor Peter Brukner and Dr Peter Harcourt. The primary focus of the course will be upon analysing the legal relationship between the sports medicine professional and the athlete-patient, especially in the context of team sports. Whilst there are several common hip and groin conditions affecting athletes, this seminar will focus on Footballers Groin (Hernia and Osteitis Pubis) and the athletic hip including labral tears and FAI (Femoro Acetabular Impingement).
