Safer Sport Program

The Safer Sport Program (SSP) has been developed with the philosophy of "making sport Safer Sport". Sports Medicine Australia strive to achieve this by providing courses with an emphasis on gaining practical skills, such as injury prevention, immediate injury management and crisis management techniques that can be used in the sporting environment.

It is the goal of the Safer Sport Program to reach more people in the active community, thereby producing greater awareness of prevention, assessment, management and referral of sporting injuries.

The Program is designed to educate people involved in sport and physical activity of the basic principles of first aid and sports medicine.

Six levels of the SSP course are offered throughout Australia. Please check with your State Branch of SMA for the availability of courses:

  • Warm Up – 1 hour
  • Sports Injury Prevention Workshop (SIPW) – 1.5 hours
  • Sports Medicine Awareness Course (SMAC) - 3 hours
  • Sports First Aid – 16 hours
  • Level 1 Sports Trainers Course – 16 hours
  • Level 2 Sports Trainers Course – 16 hours +

The shorter courses start with the most basic preventative measures and target the individual participant, while the longer courses produce graduates capable of helping others - the Sports Trainers Program.

These courses are coordinated by the State Branches of SMA and are open to everybody interested in sport including: athletes, parents, coaches, trainers, nurses, club officials, teachers, facility supervisors, fitness and recreational leaders and health professionals.
